10 Questions to Ask an Ottawa Wedding Videographer

Whether you are planning an outdoor ceremony along the Rideau Canal or a reception at a private estate in Rockcliffe Park, your videographer is one of the more personal vendors you will hire. Unlike most, they walk alongside you through every emotional moment of the day.

To make sure you are booking a true professional, skip the generic pricing questions and ask these instead.

1. Can we watch two full-length client films?

A short reel is easy to polish. A full film shows whether a videographer can hold your attention across an entire day, with a real narrative and without leaning on the same few editing tricks.

2. What is your backup plan for live audio?

A beautiful film is ruined by bad sound. Ask how they capture your vows and speeches:

Do they use backup lapel mics on both partners and the officiant?

How do they feed off the DJ or band’s sound board at a venue like the Château Laurier?

What is their plan for wind noise at an open-air ceremony by the river?

3. How do you work alongside our photographer?

Your photographer and videographer should move like a team, not compete for the same light. Ask how they coordinate during the first look, the aisle walk, and the first dance. Experienced local filmmakers often already know the city’s photographers.

4. How do you handle low light and historic venues?

Spaces like the Canadian Museum of History or a dim ballroom take real technical skill. Ask whether they use low-light lenses or add discreet, off-camera lighting to keep the mood without blinding your guests.

5. Do you direct, or document?

You want to know what it will feel like to be on camera. The best approach is usually a balance: gentle direction during portraits, then stepping back to capture honest moments during the ceremony and reception.

6. What exactly is included in the contract?

"Full coverage" is vague. Get the specifics in writing:

How long is the highlight film versus the full feature?

Are full ceremony and speech edits included as separate pieces?

Can you get the raw footage for your own archive?

7. What happens if equipment fails or an emergency comes up?

Professionals build in backups. Ask about their fail-safes:

Do they record to dual cards, so footage is backed up as it is captured?

Do they carry backup cameras, lenses, and audio gear on the day?

Who covers for them if a medical emergency comes up?

8. How do you handle drone footage and airspace rules?

Drone shots add real scale to a film, especially over the Gatineau Hills or a countryside estate. But drone use is regulated. Make sure your videographer holds the appropriate Transport Canada certification and knows the local restrictions.

9. What is your real post-production timeline?

Editing is where the film comes together, and it takes time. Ask for a clear timeline:

How long until you receive the finished films?

Is there a short teaser soon after the wedding?

What is the process if you want a round of edits?

10. Why are you the right fit for our story?

This shifts the conversation from a transaction to a partnership. Listen for a filmmaker who is genuinely curious about your relationship and the feel of your celebration.
